Frequently asked questions.

Postage Information

We try our best to keep postage down. Seeds are sent by normal mail unless otherwise requested. Plants within Tasmania are sent by Australia Post parcel. Plants sold to mainland states are sent by express. We have had too many bad experiences when not using express. It does unfortunately increase the cost.

Sometimes postage is delayed a little due to high work loads, please, if you are ever worried about your order, contact us and we can work on this.

Quarantine

Plants sent in containers are grown in a soil-less growing media and we take special care to keep them free from pests and diseases.

See useful information for more details.
While we take the utmost care in the quality of our seeds and sending them out to you, we are at the mercy of Australia Post. Consequently we cannot be responsible for delays that are out of our control, such as quarantine impoundment or delays, lost or stolen items or shipping delays.
It is the responsibility of the purchaser to know the quarantine restrictions that are applicable to your state.  So please check for any restriction prior to placing an order.

Stratification of Hellebore seeds

We will be stratifying hellebore seeds to provide better germination success for our customers. When the customer receives the stratified seeds they will be able to sow straight away and place outside. After a decent cold snap your should start to see your seeds germinate. The process will take a couple of months, delaying the release of the seeds available for the season, but the end result provides a far superior product with speedy and high rates of germination.

Seed and quality

Our family has worked in the nursery industry for 35 years, we take great pride in producing quality products as well as using our skills to hybridise and bring you interesting products.
Every year we collect, clean and grade our seed to ensure good quality they are stored in a cool and dark environment to prevent degradation. We do not store seed any more than 2 seasons. Germination rates decrease significantly in older seeds and we would rather only sell a quality product.

Plant suitability

The plants that we specialise in are best suited to a temperate climate, zone 3 -4 with a hot dry summer and a cool to mild winter (-5oC to 35oC temperature range). In the almost certain event of a heat wave or sudden cold snap your plants may be damaged.

Why some seeds are slow to germinate

We specialise in rare and unusual plants, some of these plants are not as easy to germinate and grow as annuals as they need to meet certain environmental conditions prior to germinating. Hellebores, as an example, require a minimum period of warm temperature followed by a cold period before they will germinate. Patience is necessary for seed germinating and be very careful not to poke around with your finger as you can disrupt the process, (something I know from experience). Please feel free to contact us with any questions around germinating and growing and we will be happy to help.

How do you control aphids and other insects that attack Hellebores

We use our own mix to spray Hellebores, it is cheaper than commercial mixes and has always worked when used well.

Good quality potting mix

We talk a lot about good quality potting mix in our plant descriptions and information provided. A good quality mix can be the difference between successful, high rate of germination or germination fail.
