Massonia citrina (15 seeds)
This stunning and rare Massonia has the really unfortunate common name of Yellow Flowered Butt Plant. My 7 year old could have named that.
Let use the real name. M. citrina. A Massonia with golden yellow flowers. This one comes from the mountainous area in South Africa of rooihoogte pass.
Massonia are really quite easy to grow. Allow them to dry during their dormancy in summer and when they emerge feed and water regularly. Plant or place the pot in a sunny spot in your garden. Mine have handled frosts up to -3 without any issues.
Once the flower dies back the real showstoppers emerge. The two “butt” shapped leaves grow out of the ground and grow much bigger, leaving this amazing leaf display in your garden.
The seeds are easy to germinate. I recommend using a pot large enough for them to grow their first two years in undistrubed. using well drained growing media scatter the seeds on top and cover only very finely with potting mix and a fine layer of coarse sand.
Keep in a sheltered area and water often to keep the mix moist but not wet. They will germinate when the next growing period comes around.
